How the Lanes Work

In any SunPass equipped lane, you must meet the following conditions:

  • Your transponder must be activated with the Florida Department of Transportation and be in good working order.
  • Your account balance must be sufficient to pay the toll at the plaza you are approaching.
  • Your transponder must be mounted as specified in the installation section of your SunPass Owner's Manual, or as shown in the Installation section of this site.

SunPass Only Lanes Sign for a SunPass Only lane.

These lanes have been installed exclusively for SunPass customers, and therefore are not equipped with toll attendants or coin-operated toll baskets. As a SunPass user, you have the ability to drive straight through these lanes at speeds up to 25 mph.

SunPass Express Lanes - Express Lanes allow SunPass customers to travel safely at highway speeds while radio frequency readers mounted high overhead on gantries deduct the toll.

Exact Change/SunPass Lanes Sign for Exact Change or SunPass.
These lanes are for cars only, no trailers. They are equipped with both traditional, coin-operated toll hardware and SunPass readers. Because of their multiple functions, SunPass customers using these lanes must be careful to watch the vehicles in front of them to determine whether they will stop and pay with change. Even if the lane is clear, you must come to a stop and wait for the light to turn green and the gate to rise.
When the gate is raised, the toll has been collected and it is safe to proceed. SunPass Portable transponder owners will hear "beeps" from their transponders. The SunPass Mini Sticker transponder is not equipped to emit any audible signals. When paying a cash toll while the Mini Sticker transponder is installed on your vehicle windshield you may be double charged. SunPass will not credit your account for duplicate activity unless valid cash receipts are provided to SunPass within 90 days of the original transaction. The amount of the credit will be at the SunPass toll rate.

Change Provided/SunPass Lanes Sign for Change Provided or SunPass.
These lanes are equipped with both SunPass readers and toll plaza employees who will provide change. Because of their multiple functions, SunPass customers using these lanes must be careful to watch the vehicles in front of them to determine whether they will stop and pay with change. If the lane is clear, you still must come to a complete stop and wait for the light to turn green and the gate to rise.
When the gate is raised, the toll has been collected and it is safe to proceed. SunPass Portable transponder owners will hear "beeps" from their transponders. The SunPass Mini Sticker transponder is not equipped to emit any audible signals.
If you are paying with cash, be sure your SunPass Portable transponder is sealed in the silver RF shield bag and/or request a receipt from the toll collector. When paying a cash toll while the SunPass Mini Sticker transponder is installed on your vehicle windshield you may be double charged. SunPass will not credit your account for duplicate activity unless valid cash receipts are provided to SunPass within 90 days of the original transaction. The amount of the credit will be at the SunPass toll rate.
