SunPass and Florida Prepaid TOLL-BY-PLATE Customers


SunPass and Prepaid TOLL-BY-PLATE customers renting a vehicle can have their accumulated tolls during their rental period applied to their prepaid toll account. All they need to do is follow the steps below.

Other Payment Solutions

For those without a SunPass, another Florida-accepted transponder, or a Prepaid TOLL-BY-PLATE account, please check with your rental car company as most offer programs that allow their customers to include tolls in the rental agreement.

Most major rental car companies offer their customers the option of paying tolls with the credit card used to rent the vehicle. These rental car customers can use Florida’s toll roads and not worry about carrying cash or stopping to pay for tolls. Using license plate recognition systems, toll usage can be associated with your travel and paid through your rental agreement. This allows rental car customers to use SunPass, E-PASS and LeeWay lanes. For fastest travel, use the non-cash lanes.

Cameras take a photo of the rental vehicle’s license plate as it goes through the toll lane and sends a bill for the tolls to the rental company’s tolling program vendor. The vendor collects the toll plus applicable service fees from the customer’s credit card, and pays the toll to the toll road agency. The service fees are retained by the vendor, not the toll road agency.

Rental agencies or their associated third-party vendors will assess the fees in your rental agreement to collect the toll(s).For more information on specific rental car programs, please contact your local rental car agency, as each agency has separate programs and fees associated with electronic toll usage. Be sure to check with the rental company for all fees and review rental agreements carefully. Although Prepaid TOLL-BY-PLATE is an accepted payment option when using rental vehicles, the Post-Paid TOLL-BY-PLATE payment option is not available for customers in rental cars, since they are billed through invoices that are sent to the registered owner of the vehicle, not the driver.

Rent A Toll (RTL) charges the toll plus an administrative fee for the service. Direct all inquiries to RTL.

Every Penske or Ryder truck is pre-enrolled, no advance commitment/contract required. Renters/Lessees are expected to have a valid active SunPass or use CASH Lanes. This is a VIOLATION AVOIDANCE PROGRAM. All tolls paid by Rent A Toll (RTL) if the transponder is invalid, not read or not in vehicle. Customers receive a bill from Penske Fleet Services or Ryder.

AVIS/BUDGET customers: $5.95 per calendar day when tolls are incurred ($29.75 maximum administrative fee per rental month). PAYLESS customers: $6.95 per calendar day when tolls are incurred ($34.75 maximum administrative fee per rental month).
